“Bowery and Houston Loses Its Keith Haring Mural”

This morning, a cry of pain went out from the YouBeMom message boards (don’t ask): “Some ass is painting over the Keith Haring mural corner of Bowery and Houston. Sucks.” But it was true: This morning, downtown’s beloved Day-Glo mural — a 2008 re-creation, courtesy of Deitch Products, of Haring’s short-lived 1982 original — was being covered with white paint (pictured at right). We’re told that the corner’s newly blank canvas will be going to the Brazilian graffiti artists Os Gemeos, also courtesy of Deitch, but we’re still waiting to hear more on that. As for the likelihood of that big white wall remaining graffiti-free in the meantime, we’re putting the over-under at about eighteen hours.
